Partner mobility in 2026: a five-year high, and a market that is changing shape.

Lateral movement did not simply increase last year. The composition of who moves, where they come from, and what they are offered on arrival shifted in ways firm leadership should read carefully. Every figure below is attributed to a named public source.

What the year showed

  1. Lateral partner hiring reached a five-year high. Am Law 200 firms made 3,009 lateral partner hires in 2025. (Firm Prospects, 2025 AmLaw 200 Lateral Hiring Report, Jan. 26, 2026)
  2. Movement accelerated at every level. Am Law 200 lateral hiring rose 8.8% year over year to 13,460 hires. (Leopard Solutions / SurePoint Legal Insights, March 2026) Law.com Compass measured roughly a 20% increase for the hiring year ended Sept. 30, 2025. (The American Lawyer, Feb. 24, 2026)
  3. Government service became a partner pipeline. Nine percent of 2025 Am Law 200 lateral partner hires came directly from government agencies — a structural feature of this market, not a one-year anomaly. (Firm Prospects, Jan. 26, 2026)
  4. The equity tier narrowed while the top of the band rose. Roughly 27% of surveyed equity partners expected de-equitizations at their firms in 2025; by 2026, top equity packages of $20–25 million had become more common as equity ranks thinned. (The American Lawyer, Aug. 26, 2025 and May 27, 2026)

The market in context

Demand strengthened through 2025 and carried into 2026. The Thomson Reuters Law Firm Financial Index rose four points to 55 in the second quarter of 2025 and a further eight points in the third. (Thomson Reuters Institute, Aug. 11 and Nov. 10, 2025) Profitability followed: revenue per lawyer across the Am Law 100 rose 5.2% in FY2024, and 68 firms posted profit-per-equity-partner growth of at least 10% that year, against 37 the year prior. (The American Lawyer, April 15 and 17, 2025)

The constraint to watch is pricing. Worked-rate elasticity has been exceptionally strong over the past decade, but rate momentum is now slowing, with client budget pressure that could constrain 2026 profit growth. (Thomson Reuters Institute, March 2, 2026) Firms with capital and rate headroom are the ones acquiring. Firms without it are the ones losing partners.

Intellectual property is the notable gap. National IP lateral counts are not published at the granularity firm leadership needs, which is precisely where our own national IP practice supplies the read the public record cannot.

Movement by market

Texas

Sustained hiring across corporate and securities, healthcare regulatory and enforcement, and estate planning; Houston led lateral partner arrivals at several national platforms.

New York

Continued group entries, including a five-partner lift-out from Crowell & Moring by Brownstein Hyatt.

Distributed firms

Pierson Ferdinand closed 2025 with more than 270 partners and $126 million in billings after 61% revenue growth in year two; Lucendo launched in 2025 offering an equity pathway with flexibility.

The American Lawyer, Jan. 2026 and April 2025; Legal Reader, 2026

The economics of a move

Pay ratios kept stretching at the highest-grossing firms through 2025; by 2026 spreads moderated even as top packages grew, and profit per equity partner above $5 million became increasingly common. (The American Lawyer, June 25, 2025 and May 27, 2026; Original Jurisdiction, April 30, 2026) Single-tier partnerships continued a decade-long decline, with nonequity tiers associated with stronger profitability growth. (The American Lawyer, April 15, 2025)

Distributed platforms convert real-estate savings into partner take-home. Pierson Ferdinand's $126 million in 2025 billings across more than 270 partners is the clearest public benchmark for what that model can carry. (Legal Reader, 2026) We examine the implications for a lateral weighing that move in The Distributed Firm and the Lateral Equation.

What we expect over the next four quarters

Stated as judgment, and labeled as judgment. Our base case is that lateral volume holds near the 2025 high, with M&A deal count as the leading indicator. A tighter case follows if slowing rate momentum compresses acquiring-firm capital and narrows lateral offers; watch the rate and realization components of the Law Firm Financial Index. A looser case follows if continued government departures and distributed-firm growth expand the pool of moving partners beyond traditional Am Law competition.

Method and limitations

The reporting period is calendar year 2025, with 2026 data through the most recent published quarter. The universe is partner-level movement at Am Law 200 firms and comparable boutiques, plus tracked distributed-model firms. Certain figures — state-by-state partner gain and loss counts, itemized departure-reason percentages, and IP-specific lateral flow — sit behind paid data subscriptions and are omitted here rather than estimated. Public announcement data undercounts quiet departures, so these figures should be read as directional rather than exhaustive.
